The Knife-Edge Profile The distinctive knife-shaped sidewall profile is the product of careful engineering. During development, the relationship between tip geometry and contact surface was analyzed extensively. A tip that is too narrow produces an overly directional car with limited slip control. A tip that is too wide increases the contact patch excessively, dulling steering response.
